About the Safe and Sound Protocol
The Safe and Sound Protocol was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges from four decades of research into Polyvagal Theory. It delivers specially filtered music through headphones, with the filtering emphasizing the frequency range of human speech.
That filtered input exercises the middle ear muscles, engages the cranial nerves governing facial expression and vocal tone, and tones the vagus nerve. The effect is a shift in autonomic state, observable in behavioral state regulation, auditory sensitivity, and capacity for social engagement.
Polyvagal Theory holds that safety is a physiological state rather than a conclusion someone reaches through understanding. The autonomic nervous system continuously assesses the environment beneath conscious awareness — a process Porges named neuroception — and that assessment shapes what becomes available to a person emotionally and relationally. SSP addresses that system directly, giving it structured physiological practice in states of safety.
